Drawing on over 20 years of experience as an educator in K-12 schools in the U.S and internationally, Dr. Douglas understands the significance and needs of great teachers and school leaders. As a professor of educational leadership and policy, he has taught new and veteran teachers, school principals, and superintendents. He has founded a GED community school, served as a middle and high school English teacher, led government summer enrichment programs for youth and families, and founded community organizations focused on urban communities. Students of all backgrounds connect with Dr. Douglas. His story of overcoming the low expectations of a high school guidance counselor who described him as an “average student of average academic ability” is inspiring to students, teachers and administrators who can see in him that finishing high school and earning a college or doctorate degree is possible for those with humble beginnings.

Finding one’s purpose, overcoming academic adversity, and figuring out one’s identity can be complex for students of all backgrounds. Dr. Ty understands these realities and the power of having a sense of belonging on campus. In particular, first generation college students, black students, and other students of color resonate with Dr. Ty’s story of resilience. His journey from community college to the completion of graduate school (debt-free) is a message university students love! His high-energy presentations are grounded in research-based strategies for success that are tangible and practical.
